I have a 20 gallon outside that I use for growing hornwort. Right now I have 4 leat killifish I'm trying to breed out there, but I need to get rid of some of the hair algae that is starting to grow on parts of the hornwort. Could florida flagfish be in there and not eat the killifish? Or is there another algae eater that won't eat the least killifish in the aquarium?

Would snails be incompatible with what you're doing?  I have a few different kinds of small snails in both my outdoor tubs (ex-pats from the indoor community tank) and they're doing a good job of keeping the macro algae in check.

I think the Flagfish would pick off small H. formosa fry.  So if your intent is to increase their numbers, this might not be the best idea.  Newborn fry might look a lot like mosquito larvae to a hungry Flagfish.

Depending on temperatures, a trio of otocinclus could work. They aren't native, but they're reasonably unobtrusive. Also, they're sucker-mouths and won't harm even the smallest fry.

Sailfin mollies would be a better choice.  While there is still a potential for them picking off a few fry, they are dedicated herbivores and will concentrate on the algae as long as it is present.
