This is a different perspective but has some interesting information...

updated it above... apparently the link changed automatically at midnight because it was in an online version of the paper... I think now I have the archive link so it should stay up for a while... thanks for catching it Mike.

Very interesting! Man, those are some big Redfins in the picture! I wish there were closer places to fish pickerel for me, but I would love to make a trip some time to catch a few!

Cook them whole and fork the meat off like mountain trout maybe? I have never eaten them so I am just speculating. I eat 8 inch brook trout, and bones are not a real problem. The skeletal system may be very different?

Anybody have experience keeping a pickerel in a planted tank? I'm wanting to upgrade tanks because mine has literally tripled in length in the last 8 months, and is now as long as his 55 gallon tank is wide. I'm ready to move the fish out of the 75, but it has a bunch of plants, many not yet well established, in Erica's Special Kitty substrate. I occasionally startle the pickerel in the 55 and he seems like he might rip up the plants. Anyone tried it?

My little guy (originally only a couple inches... later 8 or 9) did great in a heavily planted bow front 25 (purchased at my first NANFA convention).  I actually think that having a lot of plants and such to hide behind makes them less likely to startle as badly.

That being said, I never had to transplant a foot long dude.  Good luck.

That part will be interesting, but in the long run unavoidable. The only real decision is whether to swap him with the current residents of the 75 - which include some fingerling bullheads that will have to be rehomed again later - or to wait until I can have other space available for them

My real hesitation actually is that the pickerel tank is the last refuge of my South Carolina ramshorn snail population. In the long run they will probably be better off in the planted tank though.

I don't think pickerel eat snails ... do they? (unless maybe you crush them first)

No, the snails are currently housed with the pickerel. The proposal was to swap him with a group of small fish which includes some Enneacanthus sunfish, a small pumpkinseed, eastern mudminnows and mummichogs. That groups is devastating to snails. They might not last the night.
