I just noticed that Brian mentioned that northern longears seem to work better for this type of tank and I wanted to mention that that is the size mine are.  They do get rather aggressive when they start nest building, but I don't think I've lost any fish to their cause.  It seems to help if I feed the others away from the nest area so they don't have to trespass in his 'magnum opus' while they are eating.  Like mentioned above, I've also got one that is building right now and all three and a half inches of him is ready to take on the world.
