So I was driving through the Red River Gorge area today, I took my lunch break and hopped in the Middle Fork for a couple minutes.  This location is right in Slade KY, directly off the Mountain Parkway.

The fish I caught were about what I expected for this location at this time of the year.

And, of course, the cream of the crop here, the Variegate Darter.:

Loads and loads of willing females:

Not as many ready males, but I did find a few:

All in all, it was a fun little quick dip.  I was only here for a few minutes, then it was back on the road.  I also caught a few Striped Shiners and a bunch of Fantail Darters, no photo'd

Awesome. Those variegates look great, and the rainbows are very nice too. Not bad at all for a quick lunch break.

Nice! And either KY darters are extra-beefy, or you've got some tiny hands. Half those fish look like they'd fill a supper plate! Way too pretty for that, though.

I'm fairly sure I have 'man-hands'.  Really though, those Variegate Darters were big'ens

Did the lamprey have 1 or 2 dorsals. We have museum records for both Northern Brook and Least Brook from that area. Hard to tell from your photos.

I thought it was a Least Brook, but didn't look at it too hard.

Yep that photo shows what you need, two dorsal = least brook in that area. I also should have thought about the timing, Northerns spawn later probably at least mid to late April there, in northern Ohio it is Mid May for I. fossor (northern brook).

Great pics Josh, especially those darters! If only I could easily do that on my lunch break here in CA.
