I have had a fish sold to me as a " freshwater flounder" which I was sure was a hogchoker. I didn't realize that lined soles are in the trade also. I'm getting a lot of conflicting results on identification and care. How can I figure out what species it is? Is there a difference in care?

Mine is oval shaped with some stripes on it. It is 3in right now and in my brackish water aquarium with flagfish (I might put it in a separate aquarium though)

Thanks

If not, the easiest way is to look for a pectoral fin on the eyed side for the fish. It may be really reduced in the lined sole, but it should be present, where the hogchoker will not have one.

Unfortunately, it is the other side of the fish we need to see!

Check out this image, can you make out the pectoral? That's what will help distinguish it. Neat fish either way.

I will try to get a picture later, I'm going to transfer it to another aquarium specifically for it and I will get a picture then. It's in a tank that is full of plants right now, so It might be a while.

Unfortunately, I am unable to tell from your photographs. Maybe someone here has more experience and can chime in? If you really want a quick ID, like I mentioned earlier, just check to see if it has a pectoral fin on the ocular side. Otherwise, you will need a much closer photograph of the head/operculum area.

Hogchokers do not have pectoral fins on their ocular side, lined soles do have pectoral fins. They may be small, but should be visible!

I don't think there is one on mine, but it is hard to tell. I tried to take a picture, but if I zoom in, the picture becomes too fuzzy to see anything. I will try again
