Right now the stand and aquarium are in front of our front door.  We still need to move some bookshelves so we can move the aquarium to it's intended location.  The current temporary location would be great.  It's highly visible, directly across from our living room window, and in view from our couch.  But it is in front of the front door.  There is plenty of clearance for the door, but I worry about bumping into it if we are coming in in a hurry.

OK, my next stupid questions.  There is a lot of different plywood out there.  Should be getting a particular type of wood?  How about thickness?

Yes, there are different grades, but you don't need to worry about that, it is mostly for aesthetics, not strength.  The sub-floor to most houses is 3/4" and you can by CD grade or construction grade for this kind of project (CD means that one side is graded C and the other side D and is all about the number of knots and splits in the exterior surface).  Stay away from "furniture grade", it is just prettier, not at all stronger, and you are paying for something that will be under a tank where aesthetics are not the issue.
