I'm looking for the best methods for catching juvenile pumpkinseeds. I have a minow trap but the holes I think are too small for a 1-2"incher to go through but I'm not sure about 1" from any side to the oposite side, it's also...illegal so I doubt I'll be using it. I also have hook n line of course which is the prefered method. I have somesmall hooks but I don't know if I have them that small. I need to know a few things:

1. I'm in southeastern wiscosnin when do they spawn here and when will they be 1-2.5"

2. Best bait/hook size (can't use flies as in fly fishing, just hook n'line)

3. how large will he grow in a 40 gallon aquarium, with a few other panfish tankmates

When i was growing up I would just take netfulls (large mesh sized fishing nets) of leaves and muck from the shallow parts of th pond. I would catch all sorts of panfish, baby bass, tadpoles, etc. Give that a try. Just reach the net out as far as you can and srape the bottom on your way back. The young panfish will hide in the leaves and detritus on the floor.

1. I'm in southeastern wiscosnin when do they spawn here and when will they be 1-2.5"

Spawning east of St. Loius, Illinois for last 10 days (southwestern extreme of range). SE Wiscosnin should dig and dance in another week or if no more cold spells. 1-2.5" pumpkinseeds should now be present from last year reproduction. Young of year pumkinseeds pushing >1" not likely for another 45 days thereafter. Assumes a population with not stunting.

2. Best bait/hook size (can't use flies as in fly fishing, just hook n'line)

Crickets or worms. Size hook as for bluegill, maybe on size smaller.

3. how large will he grow in a 40 gallon aquarium, with a few other panfish tankmates

Mine can reach >6 inches, regardless of sex. Poor nutrition and breeding really slows them down. Tank reared fish can reach 4 inches in 7 months from birth. Overall they do not stunt based on tank size alone.

Like Scotefontay said about the nets is what I usually do. Takes alot of time scooping through the right locations to catch the different species on the lake/pond/stream. I also use 4lbs line with size 16-18 fly hooks to catch golden shiners and any other small bait fish.
