One of the most grumpiest, reclusive and antisocial darters in the tank is my fantail. However, after changing cameras, he finally let me take a good photo of him while he's decently barred. He didn't seem to mind the red camera too much, but he absolutely hates my silver camera. Here he is with an adult banded darter.

Fantails are a very interesting darter. When they are "colored up" with dark stripes and a black head they are quite handsome.

About once a week he darkens to where his barring becomes very noticeable and his head turns close to black. Since I have no other fantail darters, I think it's his aggression warning to others. He's quite territorial when anyone comes around the shell he hides under. The stonecat just swam in under his shell, driving him out and he turned quite black in response. Barred very much like a logperch. Pretty fish but not really sociable. They seem to like to be left alone.

Too bad you weren't closer and we could catch some for you. I caught 1 yesterday and 4 more today. Here's a dogpile of darters getting acclimated to go into my tank. There's the fantails, a juvie male rainbow and some Johnny darters in this mix.
