The last time I had a chance to get out I happen to notice in one of my swoops of the bottom of a creek I go to that I had a dozen or so of these little guys. I released all but four, I wanted to see what they were. I am assuming some sort of sunfish, which is the dominate fish around here, at least in the creeks. So what do you think they are,

Really only educated guesses, but with the position of the fins I would lean toward pygmy sunfish or pirate perch.

I say pirate also. Overall shape, gape size, fin positioning, and caudal fin shape. Pirate perch when still clear have anus in typical position. Look a little closer at lateral line. Pirate perch will already have the branched pattern about the face. Does it swim with pectoral fins moving in unison? If yes then pirate perch again.
