Hi everyone! Here's a question...could I keep a pair or trio of a riverine darter species, such as rainbow darters, in a 10 gallon aquarium? I was going to use a 160 GPH pump with the intake on the other end of the tank, and I was going to put the darters outside in a 40 gallon water garden (with a good pump and a large heater to prevent the water garden from freezing) for 2-3 months in fall to get the cooldown period they require to spawn. The 10 gallon itself would have a substrate of river pebbles and sand, and perhaps some larger rocks as well for line of sight breaks; it would also have two fans (one pointing in, one pointing out of the tank) to encourage evaporative cooling and keep the tank a few degrees cooler (facilitated by some insulation attached to the tank). Thanks :)

Great! Are there any improvements I could make to ensure this tank is comfortable for darters? I have some 5 gallon tanks with comparable flow rates (80 GPH vs 160 that I suggested for this tank) that support excellent plant growth.

I'm sure I've said this before, but darters don't really need or like flowing water.  Its just that they are better designed for it and they outcompete everyone else in such habitat.  In a tank with you providing enough food, they will do just fine with no flow even. What they do need is higher levels of oxygen and frequent feedings to accommodate their metabolism.

Cool! I can easily provide those :) My planned feeding regime was live baby brine shrimp four days a week, frozen food four days a week (likely involving two days with both BBS and frozen food), and maybe pellets if I can train the darters to accept them. Would twice daily feedings work? And when giving them a chilling period outside, would reducing that to once a day make sense?

I'm not seeing a picture, not sure if that's an issue on my end or yours, but a better place to put this would be ID assistance. Once you select a category there's a black box in the upper right hand corner that says start new topic
