Once called a Northern Longear sunfish, now only called a Northern sunfish ( Lepomis Peltastes). Like most sunfish, they are an extremely colorful, vibrant and energetic species. This is why they don't do well for photography. Like the Spotfin shiner, they're always on the move! I caught him when he was 1/4" long. He's now 3" inches long. Natural LED light used, without flash, and I apologize for the poor quality picture. He never stops moving!

Where are you located? They're common in central / northern Ohio.

I am in the Chicagoland area. Only place I have heard near me is some areas in Wisconsin or in Kankakee but I haven't been to either area before. I'd wouldn't know where to begin searching! lol

The Kankakee area is a great area and would make a nice day trip. Haven't been there in about 34 years, but I would think that the Kankakee river would be the place to start. Get online and look up the aquatic biodiversity of the Kankakee river. You might need to discover what watershed its in.

My grandparents lived in Blue Island, so once in awhile we'd make a trip to the Kankakee river to hunt indian arrowheads. It's great out there!

If you have kids that like to fish and wade creeks, or even are married to someone who likes to fish and wade creeks, this would be an exceIIent and fun outing. A beautiful area that gets you out of that concrete jungle.
