Yesterday while out collecting, I found this thing in a river in NE Texas. A friend who I was with said he sees them frequently in lake Palestine. I haven't a clue what it is. A sponge? A fruit of a plant? The object is about 3" in diameter. I know it's not a fish, but figured someone here might know. Thanks! The picture is here.

I think that's what they call a bryozoan. Other than that I don't know much about them. I've seen some big ones though. Big ball 'o jelly, right?

Thanks guys! Some google searching on bryozoa indicates the species might be Pectinatella magnifica. Pretty cool.

Now I finally know what those are! In places around here- they seem to infestate everywhere.
When I was younger, people had a strong urge to throw them at me . I always assumed they were eggs or something (since they always had black spots in them and sometimes bloodworms crawling around).

I agree too, that it's a bryozoan. I have seen them here in Ohio in some local lakes.

What do those things do? What is their purpose in the wild?
