Here is a plant I collected from near a spring in coastal South Carolina. Anyone know what it is?
That is a Poison Hydrophlox - typically you will get intense pain and burning 3-5 days after handling it if you are unprotected. You used gloves to handle it, I hope?

From the photo, I'm guessing that it's a species of Polygonum (a smartweed or knotweed). Of course, there are hundreds of polygonums out there. I've also left my plant keys at work. But anyway, do the bases of the leaves sort of form a sheath where they wrap around the stem? If so, most likely a Polygonum species.
Yes, it does appear like the leafstalk forms a sheath extending down the stem a short distance. It does look like it may be a species of Polygonum
Thanks
