I ask this, because I have read about stocking small ponds, ( less than few acres) and they do not recommend crappie. Would this be ok for a 55 gallon mixed species tank? I have warmouth, bluegill and what I think is longearxpumpkinseed. I am not looking to have them spawn, I am trying to buy a 180 gallon, once I sell my saltwater setup. Thanks

I would think that a 55g tank would be too small. The 180 should be fine for a couple though.

Crappies, both lack and white, are wimps. Bluegill and your possible hybrid will likely kick your crappies fins off. The pond rule of thumb related to spawning success / failure probabilites where populations in small bodies of water unbale to maintain themselves or they produce too many and stunt.

I had a juvenile crappie that randomly attacked anything that got near it- even large CA cichlids(I'm talikin 7'' plus here).

-At least, until my Jack Dempsey got hungry...

The reason that crappie are not reccommended for pond stocking is that white crappie are notorious for over populating, and stunting. Black crappie are not as bad. Niether is an aggressive fish compared to most Lepomis. They are in my opinion fantastic aquarium fish. They can be slow to get off of live feeders, but mine eat freeze dried earthworms, and some pellets.

Matt is right. My black crappie is totally peaceful. It refused to eat for about four or five weeks, and I grew concerned that it would starve to death. But then one day it decided to eat, and it has eaten well ever since. It usually gets freeze-dried freshwater shrimp, with occasional live feeders. It is a very nice aquarium fish.

The black crappie I have kept were never that aggressive.

I could never get them trained on pellets but they sure loved worms and minnows.
