There have been a number of threads that address this question, but I can't seem to find them at this moment.

Basically, it is possible, depending on what sunfish species you get and how much patience you have. You can probably do it with some of the more docile sunfish species such as warmouth although I'd advise putting just two of those in one tank. Patience because you will have a harder time feeding the pickerel with sunfish in the tank.

I've asked the question on this forum before. Like drewish mentioned, it will probably be harder to feed the pickerel with sunnies in the tank. Although I haven't kept them together, I know that sunfish are aggressive enough when feeding to where the pickerel probably wouldn't even see the feeders before they were eaten. Even warmouth, which are a farely peaceful species, are voracious feeders, IME. And don't think that you'll just wait until the sunnies are full and then feed the pickerel... sunnies don't get full.

I currently have a northern longear in the pickerel tank, and everybody eats well. When I feed, I make sure that there's enough for everbody. Usually, the pickerels have eaten while I'm still netting the feeders into the tank; they eat very quickly. The longear, on the other hand, chases the feeders around for a while before eating any. So, in my experience, it is not a concern whether the pickerels get enough food; rather, I need to make sure that there's enough for the longear after the pickerels have had their fill.
