I am going to northern Mexico (Monterey, Nuevo Leon) in mid November. I am going to go collecting there. So what livebearers and/or killies can I expect to find in the waters around Monterey and within about a 2 hour driving radius thereof? Thanks.

Please keep in mind that many of the species in Mexico, and especially in this area, are endangered. Also please do some research on the front end as to if and how collecting can be done. It is my understanding that it is very difficult to receive the permits necessary for any collection in Mexico and next to impossible to bring aanything back.

Thanks. I'll keep it in mind.

And definitely don't bring any white powders with you, such as the anesthetic MS-222. The Federales really don't understand the distinction between a novacaine derivative like MS-222, and standard white flake cocaine.

Sounds like you speak from experience. :) I certainly won't be taking or bringing back anything that could be mistaken for something like drugs. My sister used to have a produce wholesale business that dealt exclusively in mexican produce. He truckers used to go to Mexico and pick up produce and transport it back to Dallas. She had to deal with several government agencies both here and in Mexico so she's given me the lowdown on the federales and their American counterparts. It's quite a process!

There was a swordtail/platy near Monterrey that is either extirpated from the wild or very localized now, not sure where it is located now. Be sure to check out Media Luna, which has a cool cichlid, and Quatro Cienegas, which has a lot of endemic fish, including an endemic gambusia or two. I think all of these are endangered, so you wouldn't be able to collect them, but you can snorkel to your heart's content. Take a look at RR Millers book on Mexico fishes, which would have more detailed information on the killies/livebearers. Much better than my memory!
