Was looking thru Aquabid this evening and came across this http://www.aquabid.c...c... My absolute favorite little fish being bred into a gold coloration. Oh, the inhumanity, the absolute disaster of it all!....Jim

What is wrong with wild-type Heterandria?

Some people just can't leave well enough alone.

Not that I disagree, I think the 'natural' color of these fish is beautiful, but doesn't the gold variety occur in nature also?

It does exist in the wild... but it tends to be like the Albino or Leucistic gambusia and not do so well when predators abound...I find this an interesting color morph and hobby strain (kind of like the "Innes" gambusia) but I would never own them myself unless one popped up in my tank..The Natural color of the fish is much, much more attractive IMO..But then I am a self professed wild type livebearer snob and do not care for most Hobby cultivated varieties of these fish :P

Well, I think there's a place for both wild and cultivated fish. I like some of the fancy swordtails and I also like the wild type ones. And I keep both. :)

Yeah, just mix them in the aquarium and not in the river

Brooklamprey, you saw the leucistic gambusia? Are they white fish with normal colored eyes? Do you have them or know where to go collect them? If so just PM me. I'm very interesting into unique colors of wild livebearers and native killifish...

I personally have not seen one in the wild (However there are references noting them) but have had in the past one or two pop up in my colonies. They are just a pale looking fish with no markings and regular eyes..

Oh you're no longer have pale gambusia? Darn.......Just wondering because I'm interesting into colors of gambusia and native killifishes.

Golden least killifish looks like rosey red minnows to me...but hey there are lots of wild killifish in the water. Reason why golden types appeared in aquarium because there are no predators eating them in the tank. Some of ponds maybe have golden types probably due to lack of predators. The least killifish are not endangered fish, so don't worry about the wild ones, they are dead common.
