I got some lucky shots today. Anytime they come out somewhat clear, I consider it lucky. I was trying to photograph my darters who were having a territorial dispute this morning, but they wouldnt hold still long enough.

Anytime Im trying to focus on a fish, everyone else in the tank gets nosy. All photos taken thru the glass of my 120 gal with flash from a kodak easyshare V803 on macro setting. This part of the tank is covered in floating hornwort, so there is very little other lighting.

The longears are still pretty small, about 2 inches.

The painted turtles destroy any plants I put in, but just like in the wild, they only eat injured/dead/stupid fish.

So in like an 80 gallon one of these could live with a few sunfish without problems?

There is always the possibility of problems.

I've kept various species of turtles with fish a few times over the years. Never did work out as good as I would like.
Had fair luck with a very small painted turtle hatchling fall through winter into spring. Once summer hit, the increased heat charged up his metabilism and he spent lots of time chasing fish. He never caught any but he harrassed the heck out of them. Tried extra food to keep him off the fish but the increased waste turned the water foul.

I guess maybe Im having good luck because I have a male and female turtle. The male spends his day chasing the female around and the female spends her day avoiding his advances. I guess they dont have time to chase fish.

Although when I add feeders the female turtle does pick off most of them.

My daughter's painted turtle is not good at catching fish, but he (she?) is getting better. I certainly wouldn't put any fish in there now that I wanted to keep alive.

If your painted turtle is an adult, I would say its a she, but thats not a very good angle.

Not an adult. Caught as a hatchling in Spring 2007. That photo was taken only a week or two ago. So less than a year old.

Its harder to tell at that size but with a photo of the underside of its tail I could give you a pretty good guess.

Figures.

I'm cursed to be the only male in this house.

Thanks for checking out my turtle's nether regions.
