As I pay respects to the exotic molly population here in Southern Nevada, I started to spend a bit more attention to the coloration of some of the short-fin mollies (P. mexicana). Some have blue eyes. Others are speckled with black, which I assume is a trait from aquaria fish. I'm sure this was discussed in the past, but just curious what causes the blue eyes and if it is common. Does this occur in wild native mollies or is it a carryover from captive breeding.

:?:

Thanks!
Shawn

That's odd I never seen blue eyes traits in molly, even in these aquarium strains, maybe you should post the pictures of them here. Speckled mollies I believe are melanistic (existed in wild mollies) or dalamation mollies (aquarium strains). Maybe you got different species of molly or livebearers or just rare traits? I would like to see the blue eyes mollies, it sound like interesting since I was into into unique livebearers.

I never seen blue eyed mollies in my whole life and I don't think the aquarium strains has blue eyes too. Maybe it just relection from lights but I guess. I know some gambusia has blue eyes too but then my aquarium lights just hit their eyes into shining eyes. Maybe you just have very rare strain of molly?

I think it is a false alarm. I found an intermediate yesterday, looked closer and it appeared to have cataracks (sp?) or perhaps a fungus. I bet the bluer ones were just more advanced in the disease.

Well I think you should post some pictures of them, just make sure. I don't think fungus have blue colored, just white ones and again it can be anything that cause blue eyes or diseases.
