Are these species of fish compatible in the same tank?

Just a guess, but I would say no. I think the mudminnows would make short work of the topminnows.

Central Mudminnow reached 5 to 7 inch long so they will eat smaller fundulus species. However you can probably keep the mudminnows with the larger fundulus species such as mummichog, northern studfish, seminole killifish, longnose killifish, gulf killifish, plain killifish and banded killifish, they're can reached over 5 to 6 inches long. Since mudminnows are more like swimming near bottom or middle level and mostly fundulus species are almost surface dwellers so I don't see any problems for them being together in same tank. Northern studfish and seminole killifish are best bet since mostly bigger species are brackish water but not these two. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I think I am going to go with mudminnows next season. I must admit, I am a little hestitant since I am concerned that they will eat my trumpet snails.

Anyways, I have to see how this is going to work out.

I am not sure about eating the snails, but I will let you know in a couple of weeks if they do. I am going to pick some up this week and put in my tank.

ps. in referance to the pm, no problem, if you change your mind let me know.

Right now I have a mudminnow in with a banded killifish and there are no problems at all.
I don't think they would eat snails, considering I have two snails in the tank.
Also, mudminnows swim at the middle to surface as long as there are lots of plants. they like to gulp air, even if you have a bubbler.

FWIW, I've kept mudminnows and topminnows together many times. A mudminnow will eat anything that is small enough to fit in their mouth, topminnow or not. You just have to have large enough topminnows that your mudminnows won't eat them. Minnow, minnow, minnow.....

They will be fine together. Mudminnows rarely reach those sizes, three inches are more common. Most of your topminnows get to around that size.

Mudminnows lover small ramshorn and pond snails, the softshelled species. I don't think they would have a lot of luck with trumpet snails, if you mean those hardshelled ones with the trap door that burrow. The few they would knock off would probably keep you population in check.

Mudminnows are pygmy pike ( a nickname to be certain, but a very apt description you will find out after keeping them), but like pike, they 99.9% of the time only eat fish that might seem too large to eat when they are starving. They will make short work of narrow bodied fish a third of their size or smaller. If they are all roughly the same size, all should be well.

The mix should make an interesting set up.
