Hey all, so i have successfully caught many Hardhead minnows in minnow traps in the Adobe Creek in Mountain View California. I was wondering if they were darters in this area? any elp would be greatly appreciated as i would love to have some darters.

From a book" Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of California" I find that for darters we have the Bigscale Logperch, apparently introduced throughout the San Joaquin Valley and the Sacramento Valley.
also in some reservoirs in Southern California.

Good book, by the way.

I along with many others would love to tell you that you have native darters in California but I'm sad to be the one to tell you that darters are and "Eastern" fish. If possible, try to pick up this book:A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes : North America North of Mexico

For $13 you'll not find a book that covers North America better. At the same time you should consider books that specialize on your home state.

I have some extra darters that I'd be willing to send. I'll PM you for details.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that bigscale logperch are quite common at Gibson Ranch park in Sacramento.

Gad, I knew that there would be at least one example of introduced darters in California. Hopefully the land managers at the Park wouldn't object to someone taking some logperch, but they're probably nudgy on the subject because for all they know you might release them elsewhere. California's native fish fauna is gefarkt, of course.

maximumminnowtrapper,
First, I am sorry for shooting my mouth off in the Minnow SubForum, being unclear in my use of the term "protocol", and bringing other forum issues into your topic.

I have only spawned and raised 2 species of darters. Send me an e-mail if you have any darter questions or questions about feeding darters.

Also, I think regs in our state prevent the collection of fish for aquarium use.
