What do teeny half-inch pumpkinseed sunfish eat? I have two in my care and need to feed them soon. Anyways, thanks.

I have a bunch of small pumkinseed and bluegills 1/2 inch to 3 inches. All are readily eating flake now. Started them on frozen brine shrimp. As young as they are they should take flake relatively quickly, especially if they haven't eaten is a couple days.

I have found frozen blood worms to be one of the best foods for young sunfish. You may have to shave off peices of blood worms for realy small fish till they can handel larger ones. I have used brine and flake food in the past but the fish do not grow as quickly as they do on blood worms. Once they are large enough to handle small sized cichlid pellets I would begin switching them over to that. As always though it is good to give them some variety in their diet too as they grow. Bigger sunfish love small feeders(guppies), earth worms and crickets on ocasion.

absolutely agree. My YOY sunfish are pickerel food so I don't expect them to last too too long

BUT, you might want to "gut load" them for your pickerel's benefit.

I just don't want them to outgrow the pickerels' mouths

They ate some itsy bits of earthworm and raw chicken, even at this tender age they are voracious carnivores. I'm going to try blood worms and betta pellets tommorrow. I'll also try to set about to some pictures, when one of my pain in the keister cameras decides to come off strike (Durn'd technological gizmos! :x  )
Also, I was wondering if they are supposed to have those black dots all over their body at this age?

I'm not sure about the black dots since pumpkinseeds are the only Michigan sunfish I haven't kept, or seen in captivity when very young, but I have a few small sunfish that eat every thing. My .5 inch warmouth loves smaller guppies.
