What can I use to help fatten an EXTREMELY emaciated fish? I went fishing and caught a pretty poor condition redbreast and felt kind of bad for it. All the other ones out there seem to be pretty healthy.

I haven't seen a fish reject worms before. Feed him purged earthworms.

Honestly, you should probably have released it. If all the other fish were fat and healthy there is a reason why that one was emaciated.
Earthworms will probably work but guppies/gambusia/feeder fish would probably work better.

I would try mealworms. I have alway heard they had high fat content and I do not think a redbreast would think twice about eating them.

I think he is referring to a treatment fishermen use on their worms(putting them in sandier/peaty substrate) to mak them more lively.Forgive the newbie question, but what is a purged earthworm??
This fish could have internal parasite problems, so be aware of that.

Another thought: I saw numerous fry around .5", so do you think he may have just gotten off of the nest?
