Well I had some good success with My Dollar Sunfish(probably Eastern by the pictures in another post) through the summer. Two of the fish were collected during the 2004 NANFA Convention in South Carolina. I also ordered a few more from KSI Aquatics so that I was assured at least one pair. In the early spring I put them in a 300 gallon community pond and this fall I had 28 fry about 3/4" to 1" in size. Probably would have had more but I also took out 3 Creek Chubs that looked extremely fat and happy. The parents have been put into my 125 gallon tank and now they are starting to pick territories. I hope to move the Dollars to a 40L to see if I can get them to breed during the winter. Some of the fry have been distributed aroud the area to other Aquarist that are interested in breeding them. Also I didn't feel like I had the space to raise all the fry properly. After seeing the pictures of the Western Dollar I may have to get some and try spawning them. They seem to have much more color.

Thanks,
Bill Flowers

In my opinion the western form of dollar sunfish has to be at least one of the top 2 if not #1 as far as colorful Lepomis varieties. The only real competition are some of the central longear strains.

I live in extreme south alabama near mobile. The dollar sunfish I get around here are as colorful as any longear I have ever collected. Would they be considered the western form?
