Being a resident of PA, I am curious as to how the PA Fish and Boat Commission interprets Redfin/Grass pickerel. I've read the regulations several times and just cannot see any reference to them. The regs only seem to refer to "pickerel" which I am sure means Chain Pickerel. So just what is the official status of Redfin/Grass Pickerel here?

Not only that, but if you look on page 6 of the "Summary of Fishing Regulations and Laws", you will see that "pickerel" has a minimum size limit of 18 inches and a picture of a chain pickerel is shown in the chart. See also page 27 of that document. Grass and redfin pickerel will only get half that size, so the size clearly relates to the chain pickerel. Add to that the fact that the picture is of a chain pickerel. I don't believe that grass and redfin pickerel are regulated sport fish. I don't think anybody even thought about them at PFBC. They are just not mentioned.

OK, I talked to a PA Fish and Boat rep at a show and.......
He said the state considers redfins, grass, and chains as "pickerels". Therefore, the 18 inch minimum applies to ALL! He understood perfectly well that redfins and grasses don't get that big. Its just the way the rules are written. So technically, you cannot legally take a redfin or grass pickerel in PA unless it is 18 inches long!
Now, since my redfins came from NC, that size and possession restriction does not apply. Or at least the rep said he thought so!
This sort of thing gives me a headache!
