I wrote this a while back for another forum, but since the discussion of getting "How To" breeding information onto the forum itself has come up, I though I would share the thread here as well.

"Spawning mops"are simple to make and inexpensive. They allow one to easily harvest eggs and if left in the tank make good hiding places for developing fry. There are lots of different ways of creating "spawning mops". So please feel free to post your plans, as well as provide feedback and suggestions on how I make mine.

Materials:
- 100% Acrylic yarn.
- A dowel, pencil, cork or other item to attach mop to.
- Scissors or a sharp knife.
- Something the size of the desired mop to wrap the yarn on. (I like counterculture DVD cases- but anything can work)

#1-Wrap the yarn around the case.

#2-Carefully remove the wrapped yarn from the case:

#3-Insert dowel or cork and tie off one end of the mop.

#4-Cut the loops of yarn at one end.

Finished before boiling:

#5-Boil mop for at least 10 minutes to make sure it is aquarium safe. Rinse off and add to tank.

Variation with cork:

If you boil the yarn first it makes it much more difficult to wind it onto whatever you are winding it on to.

I am good at finding wrong ways to do things.

Having had some great success with DIY sponge filter / fry nursery combos, for 2008 my big DIY to-do is to make my own canister filter (with photographs and a writeup, of course)

I made my mops basically the same way, I just used the forest green color (helps to see eggs too) and I tie small jaged stones in the "knot" to help sink the mop.

I've been making very similar sponge filters out of 1/2" PVC. What I have done differently is to put and end cap at the bottom and an elbow at the top, with a hole drilled through it. I fill teh bottom with gravel to weight it down. I have used both square and round. My only though is that the square offers more surface area (forage for fry) than the cylindrical sponge. On a couple I also tried cutting out triangular pieces on the corners of the sponge cube to make more surface area.
