I was just wondering if someone has put up a poll to see what the most common native species kept is?

If not I will start here. I am just talking about fish in tanks not pond or outside fish. I figure this could end up being a large list for some of the more avid collectors out there.

I have

5 Green sunfish
8+ Mosquito fish
1 largemouth bass

please add up the totals after your list.

Cool idea, I just posted a lot of them in another post you started but I'll put here again

My community tank (75 gallons) has two eastern mudminnows, 2 pumpkinseeds, 6 shiners (swallowtail and satinfin), a tessellated darter, 4 banded killifish, and two mummichogs.

I also have 5 bluespotted sunfish and 2 mosquito fish.

Most commonly kept natives? Just look at the threads in the Sunfish subforum. Sunnies win by a landslide, with bluegill being the most popular for some reason. LMB are right up there too.

You're sure he wasn't a hybrid?

I have in my 40 long:
between 5 and 7 central mudminnows.(started with 8, lost one about a month ago to an accident, but never seem to see more then 5 at a time..but never saw more then 4 or 5 at a time BEFORE the loss, and have never found or seen another dead one..so entirely possible all save the known casualty are still in there!)
6 blackchin shiners,
6 northern redbelly dace
11 rainbow darters
1 greenside darter
7 american flag fish
3 gambusia
1 western banded killiefish
Adding soon:
couple more greenside darters.
some dwarf crayfish(once I have a separate population up and running).
In spring(or thereabouts). Some(maybe a pair...)bluespotted sunfish. The Sunfish are not 100 percent certain..I'd like some, just unsure yet of if they will fit in with the rest of the community.

All,

Here is a list of my fish. This is both my personal stock and my for-sale stock inclusive.

26 Johnny Darters (Etheostoma nigrum)
15 Fantail Darters (Etheostoma flabellare)
11 Common Shiners (Luxilus cornutus)
10 Bluntnose Minnows (Pimephales notatus)
10 Show-Quality Blackstripe Topminnows (Fundulus notatus)
9 Swamp Darters (Etheostoma fusiforme)
8 Bluefin Killifish (Lucania goodei)
8 Least Killifish (Heterandria formosa)
6 Roanoke Darters (Percina roanoka)
5 Blacknose Dace (Rhinichthys atratulus)
5 Creek Chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus)
5 Hornyhead Chubs (Nocomis biguttatus)
4 Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis)
4 Sand Shiners (Notropis stramineus)
4 Spotfin Shiners (Cyprinella spiloptera)
3 Tadpole Madtoms (Noturus gyrinus)
2 Central Mudminnows (Umbra limi)
1 Blackchin Shiner (Notropis heterodon)
1 Central Stoneroller (Campostoma anomalum)
1 Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas)
1 Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas)
1 Southern Redbelly Dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster)
1 Unidentified “Finer Shiner” (*Came in with a batch of Rainbow Shiners)
1 Yellowfin Shiner (Notropis lutipinnis)(*Soon to be 5 of these)

The "Finer Shiner" I don't have any pictures of because she won't sit still for the camera. She was sent to me as a female Rainbow Shiner (Notropis chrosomus) but I'm not convinced that she is because of her coloration, or lack thereof. The only reason I know she's a female something is because she's gravid. I'll have to try harder to get some pics to post.

The Blackstripe Topminnows I call "Show-Quality" because I won an award for a pair that I entered into a killifish show from the same collection site as the ones I have in-house.

All of the fish in my list are split-up among the 13 tanks that I have. They range in size from 55 gallons to <1 gallon. The majority of my tanks are heavily planted.

You may all laugh at me, but the only native fish I'm keeping right now (besides a bunch of rosy reds) are a least brook lamprey that's been living in my refrigerator for two years, and two southern redbelly dace. But I'm getting more soon!

These are the natives I am currently keeping. I think. Most of my small tanks are so clogged with java moss that i'm not sure of the counts.

Work tank:
2 Gambusia
2 Flagfish
3 Swamp darters
1 Tadpole madtom

Nano tank at home:
6 Least killies

I also have this giant shrimp/prawn that came with a tank that I bought that I'm assuming is native but I'm not sure.

Boyfriend had a pair of Montezuma swordtails in one of his tanks. There are also miscellaneous swordtails and mollies in the house but the fancy aquarium-bred mutts don't count, right?

I tried breeding orangespotted the last two seasons with barely any success (I got a grand total of 5 young) and will likely try again next spring. They just don't seem to work as well as the rest of the Lepomis in a clear vegetated stagnant pond. I'm thinking of trying to add a little movement and some clay to the water to mimic a large muddy river like what they are tipically found in. I don't currently have adults but they are easy for me to get.
