One more question, are they always electric blue or only during breeding season? If not, what do they look like when not in mating colors?

I really don't know what others experience with them has been, but mine stayed pretty colorful year round. Maybe not like they can look like in their prime, but good looking. I did feed a lot of live foods, and they were in a basement tank, and probably never saw anything above 70 degrees, and were usually in the mid 60's.

I did not try it, mine were in a fairly large community tank, but I have heard that they are not terribly hard to spawn. This is a species that more should concentrate on.Certainly a very desirable aquarium fish. Good luck, and keep us informed.

I think Ill take your advice and do a species only tank...I agree, they are gorgeous and worth a tank of their own.
