Been going through CDs of old scanned prints I took some number of years ago. Found these pics I'd forgoten about. Never did feel like I had the id on this one right. I always called it a Carolina darter but was more guess than anything.
This fish was caught in southeastern North Carolina [Bladen co]. It was in a ditch with dark tanninc water, lots of plants and no current. Bluespot sunnies, lined topminnows and gambusia were other species found with it.
I kept it for a couple of years before it died. It lived in a planted tank with swamp darters which it resembled in shape, size and behavoir.
Darter ID?

see no reason why it isn't a swamp darter also. Carolina darters not there and it does not look like a sawcheek. southern subspecie.

I went back and forth on that idea for a long time. As I said, size, shape and behavoir as well as habitat were similar. What kept me mystified was the dramatic difference in coloration. As I said, I kept both side by side so the differences were always evident.
