I was thinking about getting a Longear sunfish because I have heard that they have the best color of the sunfish. However I was wondering how big I could expect it to get in my tank. I was wondering what others have experienced with there longears.

Brian Zimmerman holds the Ohio state record Longear. I believe it is 6.5 inches.

They are mid-sized Lepomis- smaller than greens, redears, or bluegill, but bigger than dollars or orange-spots. I've never seen one over 6" long, 1/2 lb. in TN. I've heard the northern populations are smaller, and only reach 5" long.

We have a male central longear collected early 2006 from the St. Francis river drainage when 4 inches long that is now 7 and 3/8 inches long. Biggest I ever seen and a fatty to boot.

Some of the south western strains are suppoesed to be able to reach 9" but the more north east strains don't seem to get much over 6". As Matt pointed out I hold the state record for Ohio for angling and it was a wopping 6.5" and .2 pounds. If you get Northern Longears they seem to typically max out at about 4.5-5", the largest I have had one get in a tank after several years of care was 5.5". Actually look to the left at my avatar, that is the 5.5" male N. Longear. I don't currently have any of these but I plan on getting a breeding group this spring.

Thanks, I thought they got bigger than that. I may be able to have one if I decide to try longears.
