Hello all, my name is Nick Lang, I'm currently a post-doc at the Field Museum in Chicago, but a couple of years ago when I was a grad student in St. Louis I gave talks at a couple of NANFA meetings (one on darters and one on lampreys). I am currently finishing up a book chapter on North American percids (darters, walleye, and perch) with Dr. Rob Wood at Saint Louis University and one of his former students, and thought to myself, "What better group of North American freshwater fishes to have a couple of color plates for?". I am going to head out this spring with the hopes of catching darters that need to spawn so badly that I can dump them in streamside aquaria and take naughty pictures, but I may bring some back to one of the labs here at the museum as well. Because I have never tried to do this before and may find it hard to get all the breeding behaviors without going relatively far from Chicago, I thought that I might be able to hedge my bets and find some NANFA members who already have excellent pictures of breeding darters. If you had a picture that we ended up using, you would, of course be credited by name in the published book, but I can't promise a free copy or anything (I'm not even sure all of the authors will get that). Anyway, that's my pitch, and if I get any really good pictures this spring I will be sure to share them on the forum.

Thanks,

Nick
