Lookit the gorgeous fish I found last weekend at one of our chain pet shores! I got five bluefin killies, one of which is this beauty:

I've been trying to get a picture of him all week, and so far this is the best I can do. He has a bump by his tail I'd like to ask about, but wouldn't you know, everything is in focus but his tail. I'll keep trying.

(I told you they'd have more fish in, Todd!)

I wish my LFS has more surprises in the feeder shipments beside the western gambusia...So far I only found a male bluefin killifish and the green sunfish but no flagfish, wild type molly, seminole killifish or least killifish.

I always check out every LFS, even the Walmart! The Walmart do get female western gambusia sometimes mixing with the swordtails and the mollies. So far I found a sixth Walmart gambusia. The gambusia are only surviviors in that tank. I don't put the Walmart gambusia with other gambusia till 3rd week for check the diseases that Walmart gambusia might carried.

I got bluefins from the members in this forum, but your male bluefin are so bright colored! Looks like he has a fluke on his tail.

Thanks Butch, I thought it looked like a parasite. Other people say they've seen seminole killies too, but I haven't seen any yet. They both commonly come in with the ghost shrimp. There seem to be a lot of bluefin killies to be found locally here. I've found six so far. The others aren't so brightly colored.

Can some one tell me, when a male bluefin killi starts to show color? I lost my one male this winter , but have some (3) juviniles from summer that are about one inch long and show no colors on fins. The adult females are twice their size. The good thing is, all that remain are very healthy. Oh and that is a fantastic pic !!!! Randy

Mine start showing color in their dorsal fins at +1", but intensity and color in other fins seems to be repressed by the other, older, males. There seems to be a visual hierarchy involved. Adult emales are larger than adult males.

After much worry over my bluefin killies, specificly whether or not I had any males. About a month now I've been feeding my natives live mosquito larva and daphnia. Though the colors are not fully developed it is assured that there are 2 males for this summer's spawnings.
I do have a question about them. It has been in the 42-46's for lows and only in the 60's for highs, is it to cool to put them out? They would be in a 6'x12" kiddie pool with hornwort for now, more plants to come later(in container flats). Will they need a thin layer of pebbles on the floor for any reason? I don't want a lot of substrate in their pool. Also they will have company in the pool. A pair of flagfish, Hets., Gambusia and maybe common guppies. Thanks for the earlier advice, Randy B.
