I have read posts where native fish are found in feeder tanks at pet stores. I guess i am just wondering how often this happens? and how do i find some of my own?

It really depends on where your LFS gets their feeders. Some places will keep them out while others will hide them. They are not supposed to be sold in most states but some will give them away while others will sell them as "feeders". Just ask the manager if they get "odd" fish in with their feeders and if it is possible to obtain them.
