I have kept them alone before, but they definitely seem to prefer being in schools of 2 or more. They're very much a schooling fish, especially when smaller. Both are sorta small but the smallest one did not like being in with my chain pickerel so I moved it into a 20 gallon tank housing a bullfrog tadpole.

I didn't realize this before. I've had one for nearly two years now, kept with a pair of warmouths right now, and all are doing well. Tom and I found a small one a few weeks ago, which I put in with the two-year-old, and they hang out together all the time. They appear to love each other's company.I have kept them alone before, but they definitely seem to prefer being in schools of 2 or more. They're very much a schooling fish, especially when smaller.

Yeah, neat, isn't it? In a tank they don't "school" like danios or minnows, but mostly just hang out near the bottom together. Kinda cute.I didn't realize this before. That's exactly what they do! Until feeding time, that is; then they're on their own until they are done feeding. When done feeding, it's right back to "sitting" next to each other on the bottom.Yeah, neat, isn't it? I have also found lone perch fry mixed in with a banded killifish school. The little perch look very similar to banded killies and are the same size. I always assumed the perch had gotten seperated from it's own school and joined the killies rather than be alone.

when i used to have some very small largemouth bass (1.5-2in) they would both chill with the rosey reds and other feeders. Then gulp one up every now and then
