how timid are these fish?

i've had two for the past month in a ten gallon with cherry shrimp & least killfish, and haven't had a single shrimp or least killfish be eaten yet, even though they are small enough to fit in the mouth :? i think they may have made a snack on small ramshorn snails (which is very welcomed) but other then that, they seem to only have interest in flake food.

are they supposed to be this social, or is it just a ticking time bomb?

Madtoms in general are very shy, even once acclimated to a tank. Larger cats, such as bullheads and channel cats, will eagerly come out during the day for food, but madtoms usually won't do that. How long have you had them?

He said he has had them for a month.

I remember when I had a madtom, I only saw him swim around when the moonlights were on. He would always be out eating snails which I found very helpful. The only problem was I never saw where he went to once he died, if he died, because I couldn't find him often enough to know.

Does anyone have a pic of a speckled madtom in their personal tank?

Sorry I missed the part where he said he had them for a month.

I'm not sure as to why they don't eat the least killies and shrimp, but it may just be because they prefer a diet of snails instead of other things. I've had several fish "pick favorites" with their foods. For instance, I had a warmouth that would only eat one type of pellet, and nothing but that kind of pellet and occasional fish. It would not eat worms, crayfish, or any other type of food offered.

I have a speckled madtom in my personal tank... and I think I might have a picture of him... but not in the tank... he was put in a 75 gallon community tank a couple years ago... and after a while I thought he had died... because I never saw him... until I redecorated the tank and he ran into my hand when I was moving plants and the drift wood he was under... he had grown significantly (well at least for a madtom)... I will have to look for the photo... but in situ is really difficult with small dark nocturnal fish.

does anyone have pictures of a female speckled madtom carrying eggs?

one of the speckled madtoms I've had for a while has gotten fat recently and has yellow looking sacs in the enlarged area, so i was wondering if it was eggs, or just getting fatter then my other ones.
