Yesterday Blake and I went out to Panther Creek again. It has to be one of my favorite places to sample. Our launch point is a bridge north of El Paso. Above the bridge it's an open grassy sandy field stream and below it's a wooded rocky stream with a riffle run configuration. It's a cool area, it's like two different places and two differing sets of fish. The darters were amazing and the daces and stone rollers were starting to fire up as well. I thought everything would be a little further along but the water was still pretty darn cold. For what it's worth, last fall we got no banded darters at all and this trip they were everywhere. I got to field test my photo tank for the first time and use the perfect dipnet I received last month. They both worked great!

Rock Bass
Longear Sunfish
Bluntnose Minnow
Central Stoneroller
Red-bellied Dace
Orangethroat Darter
Fantail Darter
Johnny Darter
Banded Darter
Tadpole Madtom
Blakestripe Topminnow
Creek Chub
Hornyhead Chub
...and a couple unidentified notropis.

looks like it was a really nice trip, i really wish i could find a good stream around here to sample some of the orangethroat or rainbow darters, they are few and far between here and i really want some of those for my native tank.

That's a nice list of fish and great photos. We'll have to get a trip together towards the middle of the state.

Thanks Uland. Give me a time and place here in the central and I'll be there!

And some of the photo tank shots I was able to pull out.

What can I say. Awesome site and awesome photos. Too bad many of the fishes have the Black Spot O' Death upon them!

Good report.
The photos were fantastic! Did you cut & paste to get the black back ground, or did you use a color fill feature?

Huh! Just noticed that the upper stripe on a couple of those Phoxinus (redbelly dace) is breaking up into spots toward the tail. Interesting, since that's what Phoxinus oreas has: just dots for the upper stripe. Has anyone else seen this in collections of Phoxinus erythrogaster?

I filled in the background. It took awhile so I'm sure there's better ways but that's how I went about doing it.

That was a tadpole madtom. It was a monster, a good 3 inches.
