Don't worry about Martin. He likes to cause trouble. I suspect the fishes you're catching are indeed in the fishes of Missouri (if you're sampling in Missouri) but might have coloration or be too small to recognize from the book. Another must have is "A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes: North America North of Mexico". This book covers the whole enchilada.

I would think that sunfish would bully the darters but they get along OK?

I've only had them together a couple of months. I have six orangespotted sunfish that are about an inch and a half or so long and fifteen darters ranging from an inch to three inches. So far they get along just fine. The orangespots don't get really large, so I don't anticipate any serious trouble.
