It is almost certainly illegal and I would not attempt it. Having said that, Purina Pickerel Chow does the trick for me. A little bit of minced Yazoo shiner adds spice to the bait - just roll the pellets around on a board covered with minced Yazoo shiner, Bayou darter, or what have you, and let them dry. I use my Bass-O-Matic to pulverize the fish, but you could just grind them up with a pestle or a round rock.

I think you might have missed the point -- it may not be legal to keep pickerel that you catch in a trap. Check your state regulations, and post back what you find here. Thanks alot guys. I will just throw in what I can find I guess. Purina Pickerel Chow? Were you just messing with me? Were you actually talking about dog food? Cuz I can deff do that mix up.
Are you able to identify Grass Pickerel from Chain Pickerel and other related species? Only Grass/Redfin pickerel are suitable in an aquarium.
I'd guess a minnow trap would be fairly inneffective, anyway. Pickerel are ambush predators, so I don't picture them hovering around a trap and finding the entrance. Only live minnows would possibly work as bait -- yes, Irate was completely kidding (except for the part about it possibly being illegal).
