Position Title: Biologist II

Position Summary

Responsible for the acquisition and daily care of a living collection of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. Makes independent decisions and exercises judgment regarding position responsibilities based upon knowledge and abilities gained from experience in the profession. Establishes and maintains a collection of birds, reptiles, mammals, invertebrates, fish and plants with an emphasis on the diversity of Florida’s ecosystems. Provides appropriate and enriching habitats for the animals and plants. Develops and participates in regularly scheduled interpretive programs that are stimulating, educational and effective. Supports other aquarium departments in developing and achieving team goals.

Essential Position Functions

· Maintains the highest level of quality as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image

· Responsible for the design, daily husbandry and maintenance of exhibits which provide appropriate and enriching habitats for the animals and plants

· Establishes written standards and protocols for monitoring all aquatic and atmospheric life support systems

· Work with life support and engineering in troubleshooting and maintaining the highest quality for all exhibits

· Works with staff and Animal Health to ensure the highest standards for all animal health.

· Delivers extraordinary customer service to all aquarium guests and internal customers

· Designs and developments exhibits and interpretive programs that are stimulating, educational and effective, and which reflect the uniqueness of Florida’s and other ecosystems

· Establishes and maintains environmentally responsible husbandry practices which reflect concern for the plant and animal collection, aquarium guests and Florida’s and other ecosystems.

· Establishes and maintains exhibits which provide appropriate and enriching habitats for the animals and plants

· Maintains tool and equipment necessary for the care of the plant and animal collection

· Provides training and support to team biologists, interns and volunteers in the daily care of the plant and animal collection

· Participates in trips to collect specimens using boats, SCUBA, and other various collecting equipment

· Assists in budget planning for the acquisition and maintenance of the plant and animal collection by providing timely and accurate lists of all supplies

· Works as a team with the Guest Services group to provide a quality experience for guests and a safe and comfortable work environment for staff.

· Regularly uses scuba for cleaning and maintenance of exhibits

· Works with and trains volunteers within scope of position

· All other duties as required



Education Requirements and Technical Skills

· Minimum of two years’ experience in animal husbandry programs at a museum, zoo, aquarium, aquaculture facility, botanical gardens or related field

· Four-year degree in biological science, or related science; or equivalent experience

· Ability to work with mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, invertebrates and plants

· Advanced knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering aspects of maintaining biological systems

· Ability to operate and maintain tools and equipment necessary for the care of the plant and animal collection

· Experience in the use of small boats

· Experience in specimen collection techniques

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software

· SCUBA certification required with ability to advance to Rescue Diver level within 3 months of hire

· Valid Florida driver’s license or ability to get one within 3 months of hire

· Class “D” Florida driver’s license is a plus
