Aquarist – Special Exhibits
Organization: National Aquarium in Baltimore
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Date: July 30, 2008

The Biological Programs Department is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented individual to assist with the development and care of a new changing exhibits hall. The first exhibit planned for this new gallery will feature jellyfish and experience with jellies and their culture is preferred. Exhibits in this gallery will change in three to five year cycles. Husbandry experience with a diversity of animals (invertebrates, fishes, amphibians and reptiles) is desired. This position will assist in other exhibit renovations, as assigned. Need to have excellent exhibitry skills and the ability to maintain displays to the highest standards.

Job Description: Provides day-to-day care to all specimens within assigned areas utilizing approved husbandry practices. Responsible for the daily upkeep of exhibits, life support systems, reserve tanks and work spaces. Participates in the acquisition, transport and acclimation of specimens. Prepares diets according to established protocols and maintains food cultures, as needed. Is knowledgeable of the dietary needs of assigned animals and ensures that all collection animal’s nutritional needs are met. Must have excellent observation skills and be adept at detecting any signs of specimen illness or injury. Works with the Medical Department to implement treatments when necessary. Must have excellent problem-solving and communication skills and have the ability to work in a team environment. Need to be able to maintain accurate records, maintain water quality and must have intermediate computer skills. Pay is commensurate with experience.

Requirements: Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Science or a related field of study. Two years experience with a public aquarium or related facility is required.
