Western NY is not too far away from Western PA, either. I may be able to make it there sometime also, if Pennsylvanians are allowed to unite with the New Yorkers as well

It probably would have to be after April, though.

QUEENS NY HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not much going on here except the city life!

Does anyone know of any good snorkeling spots in upstate NY? I'd love to see native fish in their natural habitat. Skaneateles lake looks like it would be great for snorkeling but I have yet to find a place where you're actually permitted into an un-cordoned water area.

Clark Reservation State Park!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its like swimming in a giant fish tank. Trophy chain pickerel, HUGE beautiful pumpkin seeds and thousands of gold shiners. there are also walleye and bullhead, thought the walleye are very skittish. When its really clear and the water is high you can see gian snapping turtles crawing on the bottom below you. Very deep and very cold. My favroite spot around the Syracuse area.

Get a canoe or a small boat and Skaneatles is open for snorkeling anywhere you are willing to paddle (hint: two canoes lashed together at the middle supports make getting in and out much more stable.)

Again, that is under 188.2 Fish Health Inspections. The intent under this section is to address fish placed into waters of NYS. This section states that a FH certifications is not needed for fish placed in aquariums or possessed for the purposes of placing such fish in an aquarium. So the bottom line is a FHC is not needed for that activity, which precludes fish from stores and everything.

The fact in the matter is it doesn't appear to get you by the "overland transport" piece, which is a separate regulation and in this case more applicable to collecting native fish for aquaria. In my mind carrying the FH Inspection part of the document would not be worth much.

If people are interested in getting together, let's throw around some dates. Herschel mentioned the end of June, this could work for me. Would others be able to make it or have an interest?

The way I read Part 188 FISH Health Inspection Requirements it is all about placing live fish into state waters section 188.1 "Prohibitions" specifically prohibits the possession, import or transportation of live fish for purposes of placing them into waters of the state unless such fish are accompanied by a Fish Health Inspection report.

Section 188.2 then makes it clear that the fish health inspection report is not needed for fish placed into an aquarium or possessed for purposes of placing such fish into an aquarium. It must include transportation of such fish or how would one get said fish "possessed for purposes of placing into an aquarium" to the aquarium.

I personally applaud the NY lawmakers for having the foresight and wisdom to address the VHS dilemma so well. I will definately be carrying a copy of the regulation with me when collecting or transporting fish in NY

By the way here's the actual regulation as the previous link no longer works:

I'm glad you posted this. I have been reluctant to do any collecting due to the new laws I misunderstood. I was sure that the DEC would not have any tolerance for fishing with a seine. There has been an increased presence of DEC in my area. I know they are not out to get us but they have a job to do.
I will make sure to keep a copy of this with me when I go fishing.

I suppose it should not go without saying, even in light of this who would want to collect in areas where VHS has been found but there are still areas we can collect in. It also makes it even more important to understand the importance of never ever releasing any fish into the wild that has been kept captive or moved from another body of water.

There are a few references to fish being good for aquariums on the Fishes of New York website from Cornell. I remember there being a reference to NANFA in on of the species descriptions also, but I can't find it now. Does NANFA have an insider?
