Anyone have/had Gila Topminnow and Porthole Livebearer before? I know they are not southeast livebearers (like mollies, heterandria and mosquitofish) but I like the looks of male Gila Topminnow in my Peterson guide book.

Really? Which species did you work with? I do know few people bred Porthole livebearers but not Gila topminnow so are Gila topminnow hard to breed or easy to take care in aquarium just like some wild type livebearers?

The Gilas are Endangered, you know that, right?

I completely forget about Gila topminnow's status, no wondering that I don't see any gila topminnows being bred in aquariums.

So gila topminnows' no-go.

Gracilis is a neat species but I prefer other live bearers. What would you like to know?

Are they easy to breed and easy to take care? Where I can find them? Not wild caught ones of course.

I think they breed in same way as least killifish is that right?

Yes, they are fairly easy to breed. Though I've only kept them in alkaline water. They like to swim around a lot and pretty much eat anything offered. If I remember correctly, the Portholes were housed in a lightly planted fifteen gallon aquarium. The females would drop every month or so and usually leave their young alone. I purchased mine from a aquarium club.

You still has them? What kind tankmates I could put portholes in with? Least killifish, can they work out in same tank?

I also have porthole livebearers, they are wonderful little fish. I got mine a couple years ago and have maintained them easily. I have more than enough if you are interested.

butch, Unfortunately I'm not keeping them anymore but they make a great addition to community aquariums. I'm sure they would live OK with Least killifish. Sean H, I’ll shoot you a PM. If you have extra to spare I wouldn’t mind a few pair as well. They certainly are neat little fish.
