Frabill oxygenation packet I saw this thumbing through a BPS catalouge the other night. Looks kind of interesting and a cheap option for small systems perhaps?

I was thinking that maybe something like that might fit in a battery-operated automatic feeder. It could drop a new one in every 9 hours (that's how long the link says it lasts). Not sure how big it is, though. Might not fit, but might be worth a look-see.

OK,

Given that I have 125 gallon tank with 25 fish all under 2".

Right now I have 2- Emperor 400 filter systems and a 6" oxygen dish diffuser on bottom.

What would you do , as a last ditch effort, to keep them alive if you could not run the filters?

Remember, there may be 3-4 days of no electricty until you could re-enter your home and crank up the gen set.

I've had my eye on one of these: Duracell

It can be charged from an outlet or your car. There is an even larger one. Has anyone used one of these?

I use hydrogen peroxide in a pinch when the power goes out and my backup isn't working. I would imagine you could keep fish alive for a long time as long as you don't mind adding it as often as needed and at all hours.

Could you elaborate on the use of hydrogen peroxide?

Add peroxide to you tank (I use the %3 stuff from the grocery store) at a rate up to 1 Fl. Ounce per 10 gallons of water. Since your pumps are off you should swirl the H2O2 around to prevent shocking the fish from a localized area of high concentration. You can also mix the amount necessary for your tank in a 5 gallon pail, mix it with tank water and then reintroduce the mixture into your tank. I keep an eye on them and add more when they look like they need it.

1 oz per 10 gallons seems a little stiff to me. That is the dose used to kill off algae (discussed in other threads). That may also kill off hornwort and some other plants. (Won't harm the fish, though.)

Since the 1oz / 10 gallons dose doesn't seem to negatively affect the fish, that's the dosage I would use in an aeration emergency. Hornwort can be removed to a bucket. Sensitive inverts may be affected, but the idea here is to save fish who are obviously struggling due to low oxygen in the water. I have successfully used peroxide in this manner to rescue failing darters.

Hello All,

Wel....if I thought Gustav was fun...we had a riot with Ike.

Water came up and up and up but didn't get on my hill
Wind blew very strong for a hurricane 130 miles away....feeder bands had sooo many twisters in them I turned the weather radio off as it was scarying the ol' folks every time the "siren beep' went off. that old roof held on and I was sure it was going to at least leak.

God Bless those folks in the SW corner of La. and SE Texas...they caught it bad!

Next year I will have a serious back up filter system. I think i can even make an airlift device that will run some water over a fluff and charcoal filter....like the old type gravity filters they used back in the 60's.

You know, I think I can get an Oxygen tank and just bleed it into the tank too.

Anyway, I hope this is it for the season. I am PTS on hurricanes!
