Welcome to the forum Travis! Orangespotted sunfish (OSS) are not found in MD. Check with the Vendors on this site as these become available every now and then.
Aha! This would explain my fruitless searches.
The range description was a bit vague when I last read about it. Well, now that I know it's no use to keep looking "out there" - I'll focus my attention "in here". Not that my efforts were completely in vain- I picked up some amazing fish along the way, and learned a bit about life in and around the greater Chesapeake.
Thanks for the welcome.
Travis.

Travis, i am fairly new to NANFA and have found that patience is a necessity, As Drew will tell you most of the serious collectors on here and even the vendors dont do this full time, so it may take a while to fall across something youre looking for, but i have also learned that these folks are more than helpful and more than understanding and forgiving especially with newbys.

What i will do if this pans out is devulvge the source (With his permission of course) on this forum as i have no desire to be a middleman or try to make anything on the deal. I hope to be able to determine if this source is legitimate, and legal because i want no one especially me to get burned in any way. so keep your eye out and fingers crossed and maybe in a couple of weeks. (hope -hope)

Well this didnt pan out. The guy who promised to produce them for me, now has lots of excuses why he cant. Hate people who let their aligator mouth over ride their canary butt, any way i will continue my tireless search and if any turn up, ill let you know.

Dude, you do know they are native in your state, right?
Get you a dip net and go start dragging it through the weeds in a nice turbid river.
Check out this site: Fish of Indiana
PS Make sure it's legal first.

Thanks for the info mike ive talked with the DNR here and. also the district person from the location of the fish, They evidently are plentiful at that site, Ive also located a source for them out of Iowa where they are evidently even more prevalent and have some on the way, as it is getting a little chilly for me to be seining yet this fall, and the DNR people told me i would have more success in the spring anyway. I do however appreciate your advice and concern, Thank you

Oh, forgot to add that this location, the only one ive been able to find with any appreciable numbers is a 2 hour drive one way, so in this economy im better served (excluding the experience) expense wise to locate someone who already has them for sale reasonable and pay the USPS shipping.

Oh I never think about the economics of it. Two hours is just about right for a fishin trip.
The way I work the math, two hours down, two hours back, that means a minimum of 4 hours fishin/collectin to make it worth my while. Now that's economy!

jimv8673,
Try the following web site (Illinois Natural History Survey Fish COllection Data Base).
http://ellipse.inhs....llections/FMPro
Do a search and type in Lepomis humilis for Genus species and Indiana for state.
Sullivan and Vermillion counties have had OSS collected from them. They bracket Vigo county and from what I remember about their (INHS) collections, they tend to under repressent urban areas such as Terre Haute. Low land streams in Illinois directly across the Wabash from Vigo Co., IN have OSS. Generally speaking, if longear abundant, then OSS will not be.
From what I remember of your area, prime OSS habitat is likely within the Terre Haute City limits.

You must have dreamed that, or been somewhere else in another life, Longear is abundant everywhere in Vigo county Greens are less so and seem to be more localized, bluegill are everywhere here, crappie, and redear in someplaces, but one thing is always a common denominator. Longear. The only place i havent tried yet is the actual Wabash which is fed by all the rest of the creeks i have tried. The one thing thatseems to be nowhere is OSS. Maybe they are here but i cant find them, Not a big deal anymore ive changed directions.jimv8673,
