I don't really observe my Heterandria formosa much, but I recently noticed that two males occasionally engage in fights. The horizontal black bar on their bodies completely disappears, and the back third of their bodies turn gold. They then slowly encircle each other and take turns attacking each other by violently charging at the other's sides. After fighting, they return to normal coloration and behavior within minutes. I was wondering if this behavior is normal for these fish?

It's not behavior I've noticed, but then I've noticed that my females are actually more aggressive than the males. They tend to get into squabbles a lot more often (one usually driving another out of her space) and are much more aggressive about hunting down fry to eat.

In Louisiana they have Heterandria fights, with specially bred fish and lots of money is bet on them. I have made lots of money from my special strain which I give electric shocks to, in order to make them meaner. Also if you starve them for a week before a scheduled fight they are really nasty..
Don't try this if you are soft-hearted or a simpleton.
