I have recently captured a half dozen fundulus species that I am having trouble IDing they are small from 3-5cm in length with an over all blanch coloration. I also captured an adult black stripped topminnow in the same location but what Im trying to get to is what is the typical coloration of juvinile black stripped? , I know there a fundulus species but Im not going to asume there black stripped due to Northern studfish and plains topminnow in the same drainage (Eastern Osage river)..

Thanks

Both F. olivaceus and F. notatuts young look much like adults.

Are you saying that the black stripe is present in fishes of all size/age? What about plains topminnow as for juvenile coloration? The blackstripe I caught was so blanched I thought it was a Plains topminnow (fundulus sciadicus) because there was no apperent stripe not even a hint, until it warm up later that day.

Then I geuss they must be northern stud fish. They were every where in a stream where i was a catching Mo saddled darters (Etheostoma tetrazonum) a couple days ago. Would have got a few more if I new they where studfish, I need a few dozen for a project next spring..

Well, the blackstripped topminnows WILL look blanched, because, as the name implies, all the black has been stripped from them
