i have a warmouth that is just over 2", and i have a real hard time getting him to eat.

the problem is, he's always hiding, and as soon as i put any kind of food in, the 9 shiners are all over it, and he doesn't get a chance.

i just switched over to freeze dried bloodworm larvae, and i actually saw him eating some of it. but the shiners still ate most of it.

what would be a good food for the warmouth? i was thinking bits of nightcrawler. i think he would take live food much mor readily than dry food.

any suggestions?

We have several similar wimps. Dried blood worm great first choice, try frozen. Smaller earthworms might be better than nightcrawlers for warmouth at first.

Try putting more cover into tank so the warmouth can stay in shadows. Heavy plants / sticks repelling minnows will also increase the warmouth's confidence. Normally these are characteristics of warmouth microhabitat.

I've got a similar tank full of hungry shiners, what I do is put a bunch of floating pellets, flake, and the like on one end of the aquarium and then I go around the other side of the aquarium and and feed the more finicky eaters. It works out pretty well, my mudminnows and darters actually go to the far end of the tank as soon as I put the food in for the shiners :) If you're really struggling you could always try a turkey baster to make sure he gets some food.

Frozen promysis shrimp or krill seem to be a great food for sunfish. Too big for most shiners and small fish to eat.

Keep feeding the worms till the warmouth gets used to you feeding it and then don't feed it for a couple days and try some pellets. Getting it adjusted to you being the source of food is important before you do a switch.

yeah, turns out its not a warmouth, but a pumpkinseed, but he gobbles up worms now. he also likes scuds and other inverts.

he attacked a piece of flake food that the shiners missed, but he spit it right out.

It didn't taste like what he thinks of as food. Don't give up, it's the same thing with children, you have to feed new things to them a few times before they'll actually eat them.
