I'm now quite interested in this particular black snail everybody's darters seem to be avoiding. Does anyone have a positive ID on it (scientific name)?

I have no clue as to what they are, but there are THOUSANDS of them in the Rockcastle River area in southern KY. I mean, you'd pull up tons of them with every drag across the bottom with the net.

A search on Natureserve says Leptoxis praerosa and Pleurocera curta are both in Rockcastle, though I'm not sure regarding the accuracy of that site. Perhaps someone has a picture of the black snail?

BTW, would anyone mind collecting and shipping me a few snails the next time they go on a collecting trip? The idea of this tank seems rather hard given that I live in the city with no car, and no native fish vendors deal with invertebrates.

I have very few to no snails in tanks that I keep any number of darters. I'm quite certain that the darters are eating them as I often find large numbers of snails in the filter. In one of my tanks, I have a large number of Malaysian Trumpet Snails (MTS). I only have one Fantail Darter (Etheostoma fabellarae) in that tank. I caught him as a very small fish. At that time, I think he was too small to eat any but the smallest of snails. He's a bit larger now, and is probably snacking on the MTS. Being by himself in that tank, though, he's not enough of a force to wipe out the MTS.

I looked up those two snails. The shell shape looks more like Pleurocera acuta. The 'black' color could be due to the water in the drainage, or some other factor, or maybe they are black........

If one of mine comes close to the glass, I'll get a pic.
