I bought a bluntnose minnow (or it might be a Fathead Minnow) from my LBS, very cool looking minnow. He was on his last limbs floating at the top of the tank. I put him in a spare tank and in just a few hours he was doing great. He moves like a little torpedo thru the water.

Does anyone know much about these? Cos I really don't. What types of fish can he be put with? I haven't noticed him feeding much, what do they eat? I've got plenty of worms to cut up, and other fish foods...

Fatheads do well on flake food and will eat any small live or frozen invertebrates as well. Mine also pick at algae. I suspect bluntnoses are similar. Mine do fine in a community tank with modest-sized sunfish and some large cyprinids. As long as you avoid big-mouthed predators (green sunnies, warmouth, creek chub, bullheads, etc.) the minnows should do fine. Mine court and nest in the tank, but the other fish quickly devour any fry.

factnfiction101,

Here are my care sheets for both the Bluntnose Minnow (Pimephales notatus) and the Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas). Hope this helps!
