How long do darters generally live. The reason i'm asking this is because i'm trying to figure out what size darters I should bring home when collecting. I like them to last me a good while.

I've had various darters live 4 plus yrs but either way younger darters travel better and acclimate better.

I second that... lots of books will tell you much less... but in captivity, they seem to live longer... I was just looking the other day and realized that I have darters from the convention in Arkansas (2005)... they were young when collected.

I agree that younger darters are much better. They will have a long lifespan and they acclimate much much better to being captive kept. However, an adult will usually be hardier and will be able to survive adverse tank conditions better than a younger fish. Also, it's really hard to turn down those big beautiful adults for the small less colorful ones.

Except for rare occasion, I try to keep a midsized darter. I'll hold several of one species in my tank for the day and they pick the one I want to keep before I leave the stream site. I'll try to keep one that's not real big or real small.
